Using CraftyB's answer, I took the entire folder indicated in the "InfPath" results of his 2nd block of code and browsed there at the "Have Disk" prompt during install and it worked. Also perhaps worth noting is this is purely a network printer on my home network. I don't think this is a "default driver" as some have suspected. Here is the output from his PowershellOutput instructions.

Update 3 December 2018: So far, the furthest progress I've made has been with CraftyB's answer. HP in cahoots with MS dropped this from the default printer install list sometime in the last 6 months (See most recent comments noting this disappearance): How can I identify which driver I'm using out of the hundreds present in the repository folder (“C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository”.)? I do not want to have to buy software to do this and the target machine is Windows 10 Home (cannot import using printermanagement). I would like to harvest the driver from the units that are already working and put it on the other windows 10 64bit that doesn't and can't get it. Hp no longer supports this old printer (laserjet 5) and so it has recently been removed from the default install list or windows update. Other windows 10 units have the printer installed already (for a long time). So, I'm getting pretty frustrated that an HP printer can't work on an HP computer, even after downloading a driver from HP.I have to add a printer to a laptop. So close, but so far, and nothing to update, like in the other Device area. BUT the drag down list did not have the 5P. So, with a little more digging, I found in "device manager" that I could add a IEEE 1284 printer. They said they don't know, and it's a MS problem. So, I got back in touch with HP service, and how do I get IEEE 1284 there instead. So, I found IEEE 1394's or something like that (I'm not there doc that said, look for a IEEE 1284 interface in your devices, and make sure there are no error codes. So, there was one HP clue that I found that seems like I might be closer to the problem A. and all I want is to use my printer that worked two weeks ago on my old Compaq!!! Contact your Hardware vendor (that would be HP, who doesn't support it) It is either not digitally signed or not signed.

the error occurred during installation, because "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver. I went thru the MS canned fix-its, and downloaded manually from HP's site (as opposed to the Devices automatic download/updates), only to get a message. Contact them." Which (eventually) leads me here. "It's no longer supported." And if the driver you downloaded doesn't work, it's MS's problem, not ours.

Then I went to HP, looked through many blogs/community help sites, and eventually used their tech support for BOTH the new computer area (had me re-do the canned parts, download drivers via Devices area, again, and when that failed (again) they suggested IĬall their "Commercial LaserJet" technician who said. When the test print did nothing, then I went onto trouble shooting. I started with W7's canned programs adding a printer, setting up devices, downloading drivers. The Device area has it listed as only a "Unspecified" unknown device. And I'm connecting my old LaserJet 5P via a parrallel line from the printer, to a male, 25 pin (DB25), that is plugged into a female DB25 parallel cable that has a USB on the other end. I've got a new HP computer w/ W7 Home Premium 64 bit. I've spent about 5-6 hours on this, and am pulling my hair out.
